2023 Tax Deadlines for Tax Year 2022 and Tax Extension Deadlines

2023 Tax Deadlines for Tax Year 2022

Individuals & Self Employed

when can i start filing my 2022 taxes? 
Overachievers rejoice! The IRS will begin accepting e-filed income tax returns on January 2023.

Drum roll, please. Individual tax returns are due for the 2022 tax year on April 18, 2023 (when April 15 falls on a weekend, the tax deadline is moved to the next business day).

The IRS does offer some tax relief for those in disaster situations. You can access all those details directly from the IRS website. 

April 18, 2023 is also the last day to make any retirement account contributions for 2022 to traditional IRA and Roth IRA accounts. ​
​2023 ESTIMATED TAX PAYMENTS due
Anyone self-employed or with income that requires quarterly estimated taxes, make sure you submit or postmark your 2023 estimated tax payments by these dates: 

January 16, 2023 (4th Quarter Payment Due)
April 18, 2023
 (1st Quarter Payment Due)
June 15, 2023 (2nd Quarter Payment Due)

September 15, 2023 (3rd Quarter Payment Due)

Tax extension filing
You may file for an extension up through tax day, April 18, 2023. If you file an extension, you will have until October 16, 2023, to submit your 2022 tax return.

NOTE: This is just an extension of TIME to file the return, not an extension to PAY. If you owe tax and file an extension without paying the tax due, penalties and interest may be applied.

If you filed an extension, make sure to e-file or postmark your return by October 16, 2023.

Nonprofits, Social Enterprises, Businesses

w-2 forms due
​If you have employees, make sure you give them copies (or notify them if they agreed to receive electronic copies) of their 2022 Forms W-2 and file the Form W-3 with IRS by January 31, 2023.

1099-NEC Forms due to independent contractors
It’s a gig economy out there! If you worked with independent contractors (non-employees) and paid them $600 or more in 2022, you may need to file the 1099-NEC with the contractors and IRS by January 31, 2023.

1099-MISC Forms Due to Others
Businesses may be required to file 1099-MISC forms for certain types of other payments, including rent, royalties, and interest, to name a few. These forms are due to IRS and the payee by January 31, 2023.

1099 MISC Form
C Corporations (Also B Corps and LLCs Taxed as C Corps) 
C Corporations or other entities taxed as C corporations must file their Form 1120 by 15th day of the 4th month following the end of its tax year (or the immediately following business day). For calendar year businesses, this is April 18, 2023.

​NOTE: If a 6-month extension is requested, the extension must be filed by the initial due date of the return.

PARTNERSHIPS & S CORPORATIONS
Both partnerships and S corporations must file their tax returns by 15th day of the 3rd month following the end of its tax year (or the immediately following business day). For calendar year businesses, this is March 15, 2023.

NOTE: If a 6-month extension is requested, the extension must be filed by the initial due date of the return.

Form 1120-S, U.S. Income Tax Return for an S Corporation
​990 DEADLINE FOR NONPROFITS
Nonprofit organizations can file Form 990 on the 15th day of 5th month following the end of its tax year.

For example: 
  • If the organization operates on a calendar year (Jan-Dec), the initial due date of the 990 is May 15th (or the immediately following business day).
  • If the organization operates on a different fiscal year (Jul-Jun) as its tax year, the return would be due on November 15th (or immediately following business day). 

​NOTE: If a 6-month extension is requested, the extension must be filed by the initial due date of the return.
